11 Plus (11+) Tuition
A child wishing to gain an offer at one of the Grammar Schools in Torbay has to be successful in the admission test known as 11+. This test is normally sat at the Grammar School which is stated as your first choice on your application form. The results are shared between the schools which means that your child will also be considered for a place at your second choice Grammar School.
The 11+ test takes place on one Saturday and consists of two components:
In the English writing paper (30 minutes) the child can choose one out of three writing topics. There will not always be the option of writing a story; there may be a writing task to persuade, inform or report.
There are two CEM tests (50 minutes each) which will assess comprehension, vocabulary and verbal reasoning, numerical reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. Both CEM tests contain timed test questions with a mixed content in each paper. All the instructions are audio instructions coming from a CD. The two CEM test scores will be added together.
We will have a programme of mock examinations each year in English and CEM. You will receive the Teacher’s feedback on each examination. This will identify if and where your child needs extra tutoring. Our aim is to make the mocks as close to the real examination as possible so that your child is well prepared. The more mocks children sit can only increase their chance of success in the actual 11+.
Mock Exam dates will be released and added to this website in due course.
